SUMMARY
The primary responsibility of the Academic Advisor is to provide proactive comprehensive academic advising and retention services to students. This position will build strong relationships with advisees while providing proactive advising related to, pre-college programs, academic programs, curriculum requirements, course scheduling, registration, academic planning, transition, policies, and procedures.This position reports directly to the Director of Academic Advising.
RESPONSIBILITIES
Advise students regarding college transition, testing results, programs of study, course sequence, scheduling, prerequisites, credit load, credit for prior learning, graduation, and transfer options
Assist advisees in developing and maintaining a current academic plan that addresses individual needs, a graduation plan, and success strategies that support academic and career goals
Proactively monitor advisee academic progress and provide case management and purposeful intervention in areas including critical/milestone courses, encouragement for successes, academic plan, course changes, transfer options and program reminders
Build rapport and assist all advisees with student software related but not limited to: registration, student schedules, degree audits, college resources, program information, student email, LMS and new student orientation
Proactively advise students regarding transferability of courses to and from Gateway including articulation agreements within Career Pathways
Interpret, apply, and inform students about college academic policies for student degree requirements and academic progress
Pursue and demonstrate knowledge regarding academic programs, curriculum requirements, course and program transfer opportunities, related career information, admissions and graduation requirements, and pertinent financial aid information
Encourage advisee involvement in student organizations and other student life activities
Identify and refer students in need of additional support including; career planning, support counseling, or general support services
Participate in college-wide activities/events, strategies, and improvement efforts to support enrollment, retention, and overall student success
Utilize college retention software to enhance the connection with advisees, faculty, and staff to support student retention, persistence and completion
Collaborate with advising team, including faculty advising, and other departments to execute creative solutions and continual improvements to support student success
Conduct student transactions in compliance with FERPA regulations
Actively participate and collaborate in the Academic Programs’ Advisory and Curriculum Committees
Perform other duties as assigned

WHAT YOU NEED TO SUCCEED IN THE POSITION
Required:Bachelor’s degree
2 years advising or case management experience

Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with fellow employees, students and the general public.
Ability to work positively in a demanding, high volume, imperfect, fast-paced, team-oriented student service environment both independently, as well as collaboratively.
Thorough knowledge of or willingness to learn Career Pathways, Ellucian Colleague, Advise, Self-Service, Recruit, Brightspace, Microsoft Office suite, texting software, Google software products and additional related student software packages adopted by the college.
Basic understanding of and knowledge of college resources for students.

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT:
Candidates must be legally authorized to work in the United States on a permanent basis. Verification of employment eligibility will be required at the time of hire. Visa sponsorship is not available.
